SINUS INFECTION TREATMENTS
There are several medication and treatment
options for sinus infections but the type of treatment that works best
will depend on the kind of sinusitis you have. Acute sinusitis often
requires a decongestant to help treat the infection. But there are also
more complicated sinus infection treatments reserved for the more severe
cases of chronic sinusitis. Settling on the best treatment option means weighing both risks and
benefits of each. You have to possess positive approaches once a decision
on what treatment option will be used is made. Gain confidence, positive
mental attitude and a thorough understanding of the anticipated outcome. Believe that you will
be cured. After being treated, your cooperation is also needed to gain a
full and fast recovery.
Serious
Sinus Infection Treatments:
Let us first describe the types of treatment suited for chronic sinusitis.
Basically, there are two types of chronic sinusitis, namely bacterial
chronic sinusitis and the non-infectious sinusitis. Both sinus infections
are harmful to human body if not given relative treatment. There are four
main chronic sinusitis treatments commonly prescribed by specialists
---oral antibiotics, nebulized antibiotics, intravenous antibiotics and
the surgery options.
An oral antibiotic is the most common sinus infection treatment prescribed
by specialists. As what it is called, this medication is taken orally
everyday for up to two to three weeks. Sinus specialists usually use this
medication as their preliminary prescription. If within two to three weeks
the infection still doesn't improve, then another medication will be given
to the patient.
Another medication is the nebulized antibiotic. It is taken through the nose,
similar in application to nasal sprays. The antibiotic will automatically absorb
and get directly to the affected sinus. It is also taken from two to three
weeks.
The intravenous antibiotic, on the other hand, is the critical medication
applied to severe sinusitis infections. The antibiotic is injected directly to
the bloodstream of the patient. This treatment typically lasts for four to six
weeks.
If none of the above medications improves the sinus problem of the patient, the
surgery operation is the last option. Surgery is applied only to patients with
tremendous sinusitis cases. The most common type of sinusitis surgical treatment
is the endoscopes - surgery operation done by specialists without
changing the facial look of the patient. The treatment, which is the surgical
operation, lasts only for at most four hours. However, it is the recovery of the
operation that will last for several weeks.
Another type of sinusitis is the acute sinusitis. Similar to bacterial chronic
sinusitis, acute bacterial sinusitis requires antibiotic treatment as well. This
is because almost half of all bacterial sinus infections keep coming back
without antibiotic treatment. When taking antibiotic medications, you have to
observe whether or not there is an improvement within two days. If you happened
to observe the progress after a week or more, then the antibiotic you are taking
must be ineffective and your infected sinus must have cure all by its own.
Acute
sinusitis is treated by re-establishing drainage of the nasal passages,
controlling or eliminating the source of the inflammation, and relieving the
pain. Many cases of acute sinusitis resolve without antibiotics. However,
patients with underlying allergic disease, and infectious sinusitis, need to be
treated to relieve their allergy symptoms. Patients with asthma and infectious
sinusitis often have exacerbations of asthma which need to be treated. Many
physicians feel that some patients with severe asthma have dramatic symptom
improvement when their chronic sinusitis is treated with antibiotics.
Other sinusitis specialists recommend culture treatment. Since many
bacteria resist to common antibiotic, they will have the bacteria
infecting in your sinus cultured and analyzed in order to prescribe a
narrow spectrum antibiotic specifically designed to combat a particular
type of viral infection.
Decongestants are milder sinus infection treatment given
by many physicians to patients without previous history of sinusitis
attacks. This is due to high rate of spontaneous resolution of acute
sinusitis. Decongestants are prescribed to decrease thickening of
nasal mucus.
Doctors also
often prescribe steroid nasal sprays, along with other treatments, to
reduce the congestion, swelling, and inflammation of sinusitis. Although sinus infection cannot be cured by home remedies, people can use
them to lessen their discomfort. Inhaling steam from a vaporizer or a hot
cup of water can soothe inflamed sinus cavities. Another treatment is
saline nasal spray, which can be purchased in a pharmacy. A hot water
bottle; hot, wet compresses; or an electric heating pad applied over the
inflamed area also can be comforting.
If symptoms persist, your physician may prescribe a regiment of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Typical duration of treatment for acute sinusitis: 10-14 days.
Since the
most common core of sinusitis is the inflammatory or infectious cause sinusitis caused by fungal infections, as
well as allergies, polyps, reflux disease and bacteria, you have to
make sure that your home and real estate is free from molds and mildew,
which later may develop into molds, and prevent any of their future
growth.

SINUSITIS PREVENTION
|
How
can sinusitis, may chronic or acute, be prevented? Although
different sinusitis treatment are lining up in drugstores, taking
precautions to avoid it is not as hard as suffering its attack. Here
are suggested sinusitis prevention tips:
Install humidifiers or air
conditioner at home. These equipment help in balancing the
temperature of your room. They also have filters which help in
straining allergen spores from the air.
Avoid cigarette smoke and other
air pollutants.
Avoiding alcoholic drinks.
Drinking alcohol also causes the nasal sinus membranes to swell.
If you are a sinus-prone person,
avoid diving into chlorinated swimming pools. Chlorine irritates the
lining of the nose and sinuses. When swimming, avoid gulping
water --- it may be forced into your sinuses from you nasal passages
and will result to sinus infection.
Take with you decongestant nose
drops or inhalers before a flight during an air travel. An air
trapped of your body expands as the air pressure in the place
reduces. This expansion may block and discomfort the sinuses in the
ears as the plane ascends and descends.
If you have qualms of having
sinus infections, consult a doctor before your suspicions can get
worse.
