SINUS PROBLEMS

Do you have sinus problems? Are you experiencing stuffy feeling in your nose or suspecting of any nose infection? Or is it just just above your eyebrows? Is it inside your cheekbone area? Do you think you have sinusitis? Which particular sinus does the pain belong?

What are sinuses?

Sinuses are hollow air pockets in your body, located in your face – the bony cavity in your cheek area under your eyes, between your eyes, just behind your nose and in your forehead. They are attached to the nasal passages via small tubes, allowing drainage to take place. They act as the sound box of your body system to give resonance to your voice.

When people complain that they have sinus attack, they are referring to the pain in any of the four pairs of cavities, commonly known as Para nasal sinuses. The four different types of sinuses include:

  1. Frontal sinuses  - eyebrows area
  2. Maxillary sinuses  - inside each cheekbone
  3. Ethmoid sinuses  - behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes
  4. Sphenoid sinuses  - behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and behind  the eyes

Sinuses are lined with mucous membrane similar to the membranes of the nose, thus, infections, allergy reactions or immune reactions from the nose can easily spread into them. When these small tubes become locked, sinus problems, particularly sinusitis, begin. Air trapped within a blocked sinus, along with pus or other secretions may cause pressure on the sinus wall. The result is the sometimes intense pain of a sinus attack.

When air is blocked from entering in any of the Para nasal sinuses by an inflamed membrane, the vacuum produced also causes pain. These are just few of the many sinus problems, leading to sinusitis.

When Sinuses Are Infected

Sinus diseases arise when the cilia, which are the incredibly tiny hairs in our nose and the chest, stop functioning. They move 16 strokes per second to propel bacteria, dirt, and cancer causing poison out of the nose and chest, before they have the chance to enter the body. The best prevention of any sinus disease is to return and maintain the normal function of cilia in a human body, 16 strokes per second.

Other people also assume early morning sneezing as a sign of sinus disease. It is normal to sneeze once awake. Our nose automatically tries to get rid of the particles that mounted up there while we are asleep. Some people complain of sinus disease after exposure to downtown smog or dust at work.

When you feel a sinus infection us approaching, rest. Drink hot soup or tea. Apply hot compresses to the painful sinus area (frontal sinuses, maxillary, ethmoid, or sphenoid). Sinus infections must first be diagnosed accurately, before taking in antibiotics and other prescriptions such as nasal sprays, decongestants and other drugs.

If sinus problems are not paid attention to, they may develop into chronic. The longer you wait to treat sinus problems, the more difficult it is to treat them, the more complications you will be dealing.

Since the most common core of sinusitis is the inflammatory or infectious cause --- sinusitis caused by fungal infections, as well as allergies, polyps, reflux disease and bacteria, you have to make sure that your home and real estate is free from molds and mildew, which later may develop into molds, and prevent any of their future growth.
