Mold and Sinusitis FAQ

Q. For sinusitis suffers, probably due to mold, which state or which area of the world would you recommend as a good place to live?

A. Everywhere [desert, tropics, woods, mountains, even 6 miles up into the atmosphere etc.] has high levels of mold spores that can cause home mold contamination problems and personal health problems such as sinusitis. You can live anywhere as long as you make sure you have no Mold Inspector Mold Testing. In addition to making sure that your home has no mold contamination, you can help to prevent mold problems from arising in the future by installing the best hepa filters and at least 400,000 µwatts of ultraviolet killing strength UV lights into your hvac return air plenum.

Q.
We bought our house 5 years ago, knowing nothing about mold at the time.  We have a Cape Cod style home, with attic areas behind cubby hole doors in the bedrooms.  It is VERY humid in these areas.  When we bought the house, we noticed a small section on the underside of the roof in one of the cubby holes that had spotty gray mildew, but it was small and did not appear to be spreading.  After having learned a lot about mold in the past month, I took another look at this "little area".  Now it appears to have spread to cover about 50% of the plywood on the underside of the roof are on the North side of the house The south side gets a lot of sun and the plywood there looks like new.  But the north side is very shady and that is where I see all this mold.  It is BLACK. Being that this moldy mate-rial is plywood, is there any way to clean and stop the mold from growing, or does all this plywood roof decking material absolutely have to be replaced?

A. Your first step is to collect a sample of the suspected substance and send it to our lab for mold analysis [is it mold? and what specific mold in identification?]. You should also test the air of the attic using a mold culture plate.  Follow the mold testing suggestions provided at Mold Testing. After having collected a sample for mold laboratory identification purposes, your first removal step would be to kill visible mold with a strong fungicide. Visit Mold Killer FungicideFollow the mold removal steps explained at: Mold Removal. If you can NOT remove the mold from the plywood by the aggressive use of such techniques as abrasive blasting, power planer, power sander, etc., then you should replace the plywood [and thus the roof]. Be sure that who ever does the mold testing and the mold remediation wears proper protective gear [explained in the Mold Killer section of this website.

Q. What, if any are acceptable levels of mold on asthmatics ?

A. There is NO acceptable level of indoor mold infestation for an asthmatic or other persons with other serious respiratory health problems or depressed immune systems. The problem with living or working in a mold infested place is that the cumulative effect of breathing in airborne mold spores minute after minute results in a large cumulative mold exposure dosage that is especially dangerous to persons with asthma or other serious health problems. Your first step is to mold test the air of where you live or work to determine what molds and in what concentrations these molds are in, especially in comparison to an outdoor mold control test. You should visit the mold health sections of Mold Types and Mold Inspector as well as our mold test kit section of Environmental and Mold Store.
