Tasting foods to find out whether they contain nuts is
not reliable.
People have died through relying on being able to tell
whether food contained nuts. It is also far better to
eat with someone who knows your problem and what to do
about it. |
PEANUT ALLERGY
A common ingredient in many food
products, peanuts, can actually cause severe allergic
reaction. Peanut allergy is one of the most common food
allergies because the peanut proteins are strong allergens,
even in its tiniest amount. It is important to note that a
small amount can be a lifelong allergy for individuals
sensitive to peanuts, it can even result to death.
Peanut allergy symptoms
involve a tingling feeling in the lips, vomiting, diarrhea, faintness or
unconsciousness, itchy nettle rash, swelling of spots where nuts have got
in contact, difficulty in swallowing or breathing or swelling of the
throat, asthma symptoms, cramping tummy pains, or in worse cases death due
to anaphylactic shock.
When is the most risky period of nut allergy attack? Teens and young
adulthood are likely to capture this type of allergy since they become
more independent and are no longer protected by parents most of the time,
overlooking the necessity of their allergy treatment. However, it is
beyond these age gaps when the risk of nut allergy attacks are minimal.
The older people, on the other hand, due to heart diseases and hardening
of the arteries, are more vulnerable and are more likely to die of peanut
allergy attacks, particularly when suffering anaphylaxis.
Is the use of foods with
peanut oil dangerous? Peanut allergic people seldom experience allergic
reactions to refined peanut oil yet it is possible that a peanut protein
in it might worsen ones sensitivity. Peanut oil in nipple creams made for
breastfeeding mothers may be one of the the reasons for nut allergy.
One of the most common
breast creams is known as kamilosan. Its improvised formulation now
contains maize oil instead of peanut oil. The previous composition version
has been blamed by some people for the increasing numbers of
peanut-allergic children seen by doctors. However, this idea was not
proven since there are clearly other reasons why allergies have increased.
It does not seem that the apparent increase in nut allergy parallels a
historical change in the sales of Kamilosan. Nevertheless, it seems
sensible to avoid such creams which contain peanut oil, and the new
version contains no nut oil.
