[Asthma in Child]
Childhood
Asthma
How do I know if my child's asthma is getting
better or worse?
Over time you will soon come to realize when your child's symptoms
are getting worse. As a starter, here are some things to watch out
for:
• your child waking at night with coughing, wheezing,
breathlessness or a tight chest (or tummy ache as some young children
describe it)
• your child being breathless on waking up in the morning
• your child needing more and more reliever treatment, or reliever not
working very well
• your child being unable to continue their usual level of activity or
exercise
• your child feeling tired from the effort of breathing
You can agree an personal asthma plan with your doctor or practice
nurse so that you what to do if any of these happen.

Using a peak flow meter
If your child is over the age of six, they can be taught how to
use a peak flow meter which may help you monitor their asthma. A peak
flow meter (small plastic tube) measures how hard your child can blow
air out of their lungs. Small changes in your child's daily peak flow
readings are quite normal but if their peak flow varies by large
amounts between days it is an early warning sign that your child's
asthma is not under control. Peak flow meters can be prescribed by
your doctor or practice nurse or you can buy one over the counter at
your local pharmacist.
